Suddenly as I spoke, there was a rattling noise all across the valley. The bones of each body came together and attached themselves as complete skeletons. … skin formed to cover their bodies, but they still had no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to the winds, son of man. Speak a prophetic message and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so they may live again.’” So I spoke the message as he commanded me, and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life and stood up on their feet—a great army. Ezekiel 37:7-10
The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” John 3:8
The work of the Spirit is compared to the freely moving, unseen wind. We know that wind can have incredible power and energy (Think the gale force winds that regularly arrive at the hills of the Wellington region). In the way that the wind is untameable, invisible, uncontrollable, mysterious, so is the Spirit of God. Imagine God’s breath, his pneuma, his Spirit, uniting with your breath, animating your body and soul with his presence.
What about the wind inspires you to worship God? What part of your life do you desire God to breathe life into?
God we surrender to the Spirit’s work in our lives and to Holy Spirit’s leading. May we be people born of the Spirit with your powerful, wild, invisible presence free to do your work in and through us.
